On November 31, CNU’s student-led campus media – The Chondae Shinmun, the Chonnam Tribune, Chonnam National Broadcasting Station – conducted an interview with presidential candidates “Jungsim” for the 2023 General Student Council (GSC), Jeong Youn-Jung (Senior, Dept. of Education) and Park Hye-min (Sophomore, School of Polymer Science and Engineering).

When asked about how made them decide to run for the election during the interview, Jeong Youn-Jung said, “When I was working as the president of Student Council for the College of Education, I realized that we cannot solve a lot of things without the GSC. So I thought I might be able to improve the school by running for the GSC.” Park Hye-min also said, “When working as a member of the Engineering College Student Council and the Emergency Committee, I felt there was a huge difference when the GSC was present and when it was not at the university. So I decided to take the run for it.”

It is certatin taht students have not much interest about the student autonomy organization itself. In particular, the GSC is vacant this year, so they appear to be less interested in it. We asked how candidates are going to turn the situation around. Presidential Candidate Jeong said, “It is our job to give students recognition that the GSC is necessary for our school. I think that in order for the GSC to work each department’s student councils should settle in show their worth.”

The candidates wanted students to know that they need to have a sense of ownership and belonging as important members of the university. That is the reason why they have come up with their campaign slogan, “Jungsim” of the university.
