What Do You Think of the GSC?

I think the 2011 General Student Council (GSC) implemented policies in which students’ opinions were not reflected. Many students are indifferent to the GSC because they are very busy with their work, but the GSC does not make substantive efforts for students. In addition, students are further distracted by the problems of the 2012 GSC election. The GSC should allow the public to participate in the meetings that decide student related problems by making posters that contain the minutes of the meetings. It should also allow a monitoring system to induce fairness and equality in their work. I hope the GSC makes an effort to work for students’ welfare and to participate in social issues as well. In order for the GSC to attract CNU students’ attention, it must stop blaming the students for their indifference and realize that it is their fault.

I have seen the activities of both the 2011 GSC (Junsul) and 2010 GSC (Action). These two groups have differences. The biggest one is that Action is an activist group and Junsul is a non-activist group. Even though the 2010 GSC acted for students through activities such as protesting against rising tuition fees, the activist group always had the same policies because this group had been elected continually for several years. So Junsul won a landslide victory in the 2011 GSC election. At that time, Junsul proclaimed that it would put more effort into improving the students’ welfare rather than political activities outside campus. But nothing changed. The GSC is a representative union of all students at CNU, so its members have to act for the students. I hope that the GSC members pay more attention to on-campus activity rather than political and social issues. For example, they need to be interested in intramural parking problems, programs for employment after graduation, students’ welfare system, etc.

I expect the university student council to work on positive lines about students’ problems. I feel the GSC is the nominal leader group of CNU students. I do not know what the GSC did during their year of work. At first, I did not know the GSC well because they do not work distinctly for students and do not consider students’ opinion. I think that the GSC has to represent students and consider their various opinions. As the GSC uses Student Welfare Service budgets, it has to strive to solve students’ problems from the students’ perspective. Some departments still do not have their room even though there are many spaces at CNU. The GSC members have to think about what students really need.
