The Office of International Affairs (OIA) at Chonnam National University (CNU) operated 2010 International Summer Session (ISS) program from June 21st to July 15th . As the 2010 ISS provided various lectures about several majors and Korean culture, international students who participated in the program had chance to experience some culture and buddy activities. Many foreign professors were also invited from overseas prestigious universities such as University of Missouri-Columbia and University of New South Wales. The students took a variety of lectures in the field of business administration such as International Business and Market and Economic Regulation, and also English literature-related lectures like Introduction to English Linguistics and English Grammar. Furthermore, two univerisities, University of the Philippines and University of Winnipeg newly participated in the 2010 ISS.
The OIA has operated International Summer Session (ISS) since last year. The program was designed to make our university a global university by encouraging international students to study at CNU and promoting exchange activities between international and local students during summer vacation. For the reason, CNU's ISS is composed of various academic lectures in the areas of particular majors and cultural activities.
Many ISS programs have changed compared with last year. Lots of foreign professor’s rate at CNU and various international students who participate the ISS program has more increased than last year. Instead of 288 number of students has participated ISS last year, 431 students has participated ISS this year. Also by starting buddy program, there was a chance to make one-on-one international personal connection. In addition, Lots of Gwangju and Chonnam culture experience programs such as taking the pottery class were progressed periodically. It was offered by Gwangju International Exchange Center on every Wednesdays and weekends. Yu Eun-Hye (Junior, Dept. of Business Administration) ISS participant said, “Participating lots of ISS programs was good chance to experience lots of Korean culture and having a global human networking. Also it was good opportunity to experience lots of different nation students simultaneously.”
Kim Se-Jeong, a staff of the OIA said, “ISS program will strengthen international infrastructure and it is chance to publicize CNU and increase name value. Also it will contribute CNU to be international school because lots of new universities have participated in ISS than last year.”
However there are also negative possibilities for ISS. Even though much rate of participating English lectures has increased than last year, ISS students in CNU still had fear and scarcity of preparation about English lectures, and there was high drop rate of students too. Also international student proportion of participation is still in its infancy and hard to have an effect on globalization index. CNU expects increased rate of international faculty participation in next ISS and hopes to be more global university by fulfilling ISS.
