▲ A locked door of the FSC's room
At Chonnam National Universtiy (CNU) the Female Student Council (FSC) exists no more. Instead, The Women’s Bureau has been newly established this year in the General Student Council (GSC). The FSC has been in recess for almost 4 years because in all that time not a single candidate ran for the FSC President. These days few students have interest in the FSC itself. If I ask anyone close to me “What do you think of the FSC?” or “Do you feel we need the FSC?”, they would probably answer as follows. “I think it’s good to have an organization for female students.”, or “I think these days, women’s rights on campus are pretty good so I think we do not really need the organization,” or ”What kind of organization is that?”

These answers seem to be the common opinions of the FSC at CNU. It is a serious problem to think that the FSC is unnecessary because the FSC is necessary, especially for female students. Just a few years ago, the FSC took a very active role in awakening CNUians to the issues of women like the patriarchal family system, prostitution, and sexual freedom. It also represented female student’s rights and called for the university authorities to be more sensitive to women-related issues and problems on campus. If we look closely at our school life, we can see that the organization achieved some remarkable triumphs. According to the present chief of staff of the Women’s Bureau of the GSC, CNU introduced some school policies and facilities such as menstrual leave for students and resting rooms for female students thanks to the activities of the FSC.

There is a growing need to organize the FSC to improve our living environment around campus. This year, a burglar broke into the girls’ dormitory for the first time and incidents of sexual molestation are higher than ever. These are the reasons why the GSC created the Women’s Bureau. But since the Women’s Bureau is a GSC-affiliated organization, its role will be a passive one. For this reason, we need a stronger organization that can take active and appropriate actions for women-related problems. The FSC used to perform that exact role in our school. The FSC must not disappear and its activities for women’s benefit must go on.

As the social situation and atmosphere have continued to change, the social status of women has improved in the last 50 years in our male-oriented society. However, there are still a lot of problems to solve in order to achieve gender equality. We need an institute we can rely upon and call for help anytime and anywhere. Female students need an organization that stands up for their rights and represents their voices. I can’t imagine what would happen if the FSC were never to convene again.
