Stronger Ties between Cultures

Marco S. Angulo, Freshman, Dept. of Korean Language and Literature

The article Multicultural Society in the Chonnam Tribune’s May issue aroused my interest in the growing population of foreigners, particularly my fellow Filipinos, here in Korea. As I go to Wolgok_dong Church every Sunday, I meet a lot of Filipino women together with their Korean families, and it used to make me wonder how they were able to adapt to this different social environment. After reading the article, I was delighted to hear that the Gwangju city government is making efforts to provide programs that will help these new settlers adjust more easily to life in Korea. More importantly, the fact that Korea is gradually opening its doors to the world by bringing and accepting foreigners to its once impenetrable society is something to be happy about. Thanks to the Chonnam Tribune, foreigners like me are updated with the latest happenings in Korea, and we can get acquainted with the events that have a significant impact in our lives.

I Am Proud of the Chonnam Tribune!

Nguyen Thi Than Mai, Junior, Dept. of Business Administration

A university’s face can be evaluated from many factors such as its environment, the quality of its education or the good results it attains in the fields of research and study. It can also be told simply when you pick up a copy of the university’s magazine and read it. If someone asks me to show him/her something about my university, the first thing I would do would be to show them the Chonnam Tribune. Not only does it have a modern design that catches the readers’ eye at first sight, it also provides world news which I think is very helpful to give students a more global perspective. Most importantly, the magazine is the best tool to show people how CNU students actively participate in university activities and that they have an admirable level of English. I have never been prouder to introduce CNU’s magazine to my friends, and I will always wish the Chonam Tribune success and support from the staff and students in our university!

My Story in Chonnam Tribune Magazine

Milla Katyshevtseva, Russian Student, Regular Korean Language Course at CNU

My friend introduced me to the Chonnam Tribune and thanks to her I could find out much information about life at CNU and learned about some truly remarkable events. As a foreign student studying in Korea, I became really interested in articles about Korean students having the same experience abroad.. One of the overseas students wrote about studying in the USA and some difficulties arising from not being used to the new life style. According to the article, the student was lucky to meet a very helpful teacher that encouraged and helped him adapt.. This reminded me of my stay in Korea and getting support from my Korean friends. Within the course of my life here in Korea, I met many Korean people that had the sincere intention to help me as a foreigner. I also want to express my gratitude to my Korean language teachers, at CNU’s Language Education Center who were always ready to give advice and encourage me and other students and found additional time outside of class to help us improve our language skills. After reading the magazine I felt overwhelmed with wonderful, warm memories.
