I am surrounded by good people: my family, friends, seniors and juniors, everyone around me. They’re funny, talented, intelligent, filled with good traits. Though I know I’m lucky to have such people in my life, one book made me think about how often I give them praise. I quickly realized it was not enough.

One Single Word of Praise That Changed My Life written by Kim Hong-sin tells the stories of thirty-two people who achieved their dream thanks to the praise they received from those around them. While reading this book, I discovered the power of praise and learned that a few simple but honest words of praise can change someone’s life. In every chapter of the book, Kim Hong-sin relates episodes where he emphasizes the importance of praise. However, the writer also states that though praising others is easy it is often difficult to carry out. He said most people usually don’t give others praise because they feel very awkward doing it or they do not know how to do it.

I’m sure we can all remember some words of praise we have received, words that made us feel stronger and more confident. Sometimes when I feel depressed, I look back at those words and they never fail to boost my spirits. Like medicine, praise works well at restoring my energy. While I like to get compliments from others, I’m a little embarrassed to that I seldom give it. But that is going to change. From now on, I’m going to try to give more than I get.

It is easy to make giving praise a habit. The more you give the easier it becomes. Your words can spread happiness, give encouragement, build self-confidence, and pick someone up when they’re feeling down. A few kind words may never be forgotten. How many times have you given praise to others? Today? This week? This month? If you haven’t done so, try it! Giving praise will make you as happy as the person receiving it.
