Kim Yun-Soo, the Candidate for Appointment

as the President of CNU

 The election to recommend the candidate to the president of Chonnam National University (CNU) was held at Yongbong, Yeosu, Hakdong campuses, and Hwasun CNU hospital on May 21. Kim Yun-soo (Professor, Dept. of Forests Resources and Landscape Architecture) was elected as the candidate to the 18th president of CNU for appointment among four candidates in the election, in which the majoritarian system were used two rounds of voting if no candidate obtained more than 50% of valid votes in the first round. He gained about 52 % of votes in the final round of the election, and received 4.72 votes more than the second candidate, Park Hyeong-ho. The election system was different from the former election, in that electronic voting system and preliminary candidate selection process, through which four candidates were selected by randomly-nominated voters of 120 professors and 12 staffs on March 27, were used in the presidential election. CNU will recommend two presidential candidates including Kim Yun-soo as the president of CNU to the minister of Education, Science and Technology. The 18th president's term of office is 4 years from August 17, 2008.

Conference on the 28th Anniversary

of the May 18 Democratic Uprising

The May 18 Institute of CNU held the 2008 Academic Conference on the 28th Anniversary of the May 18 Uprising at the YongBong Center for Culture on May 22. This conference entitled with “The May 18 Democratic Uprising and Social Movements in the Advanced Age” was structured as a part of efforts examine the present state of democracy expansion and social movement in local community. The conference was programmed into two parts, academic conference about the democracy expansion and the prospects for social movement, and case study presentations on democracy in the space of everyday life focusing local community movement in Gwangju. Kim Gi-gon, Senior Researcher of the May 18 Institute, said, “It is expected that our democracy and social movement will be more matured through this conference to commemorate the spirit of the May 18 Uprising”. Many scholars and social activist participated in the conference and discussed social movement of advanced society with other participants. to the wider world this conference.

 

 

 

 

 

 

YES Group to Support the Yeosu EXPO

 On March 24, CNU established the Yeosu Expo Support (YES) Group with the slogan, “Idea Partner of the Yeosu Expo.” The YES Group, composed of fifteen CNU professors, will carry out three supporting projects First, there is a project to create an academic foundation and to produce a documentary based on the original forms of representative culture of Yeosu. Secondly, a project will develop cultural contents and to operate anEXPOAcademy for setting up the identity and image of Yeosu. Thirdly, a Project will cultivate humanpower needed by the EXPO. Lee Chul, Head of the YES Group, said “The YES Group has been organized with the purpose of voluntarily supporting the Yeosu Expo because it is an important international event. The EXPO will contribute to local expansion and improvement of the nation. CNU will become the hub of Jeollanamdo.” The projects of the YES Group will academically back up the results and meaningfulness of the Yeosu EXPO.

Lee Jae-seo, a researcher at the System Security Research Center of CNU, won the second prize, nicknamed the “Midas Prize,” in a preliminary hacker competition called “Code Gate 2008.” The contest was held by the Korea Information Security Agency at COEX on March 15, in order to raise social awareness of hackers and train security personnel. He got the prize in the computer security section of the contest. He designed a technique that could protect the exposure of individual users` information and tighten web security. His technique was admitted to be remarkable in the part of creativity, publicity and marketability by the judges of the contest. He said that he would like to express thanks to Professor No Bong-nam and other members of the club “Information Security 119” for their sincere help.

 RIVI and the Cause of Toxin of Vibrio Blood Poisoning

The Research Institute of Vibrio Infection (RIVI), Clinic Vaccine R&D Center

of CNU announced that they found a toxin as a cause of Vibrio blood poisoning that leads to cell destruction on April 14. Vibrio blood poisoning is known for being a very dangerous disease because its deadly poison can destroy people’s cells completely within two hours. As many researchers have tried to clarify its cause for last 25 years, the achievement of the RIVI has a more significant meaning. Lee Jun-haeng, Director of the RIVBP had strived to discover the cause of the toxin since 1984. It is expected that new preventive medicine against vibrio infection will be developed thanks to this result. RIVI’s result was published in the April issue of Cellular Microbiology, which is the world wide academic journal in the field of pathogenic microbiology.
