Two Big Events for Language Learning

    As a means of helping students develop English and Korean proficiency, CNU held two special and informative events. On October 9, there was an event to celebrate the 561st Hangeul Proclamation Day. The Korean Education Center and the Language Education Center jointly operated this event. Many foreign students participated in a variety of programs of the event such as a Korean essay contest, taking pictures before the Korean alphabet `Han`,`Geul` and `Nal` using a cell phone, experiencing calligraphy writing in Korean and a quiz contest related to Hangeul and Korean culture. These were intended to inform foreign students about Hangeul Proclamation Day. The other event was the English Contest hosted by the Language Education Center on November 9. Unlike the format of ordinary English contests, it consisted of a variety of examination formats and was divided into five parts: vocabulary and idiom test, grammar test, reading test and speech contest in the morning session, and a pop song contest in the afternoon.


CNU to Hold Public Lecture by Leading Scientists

    A scientific lecture series for the general public, “Science Touch on Friday” was started on October 19 at Public Hall in Gwangju Station. The public lecture series, sponsored by the Ministry of Science & Technology and the Korea Science & Engineering Foundation, was first started at Seoul Station last February and CNU joined this program starting last month. Park Se-jong, Public Relations Director of CNU, said, “It was difficult for local citizens to get in contact with prominent scientists. However, through this lecture series, Gwangju citizens can seize the opportunity to contact the fruits of scientific studies.” 85 eminent scientists in various fields will offer lectures and explain their studies to introduce the common sense contained in science. “Science Touch on Friday” is expected to contribute to popularize scientific knowledge. It will continue to be held on every Friday at Gwangju Station until July 10, 2009.


Lee Ton-ju, Awarded King Sejong Culture Prize

    Lee Ton-ju, a Professor Emeritus of the Department of Korean Language & Literature, received the 26th King Sejong Culture Prize in Academy on October 9, Hangeul Proclamation Day. The King Sejong Culture Prize was established in 1982 and has been administrated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to pay tribute to the spirit and exploits of King Sejong. The Korean Language Society recommended Professor Lee for his achievement in Korean Language & Literature by systematizing the studies of Korean dialect, Korean script and Chinese characters. He said, “It was useful to correctly understand Chinese phonology for studying Korean language and the Korean script. The more I study Hangeul, the more I know it has a profound principle. I would study Korean language as far as my health permits and I wish my studies help future generations.”


Kim Hyun-woong, Elected as New President of the GSC

    The election of the 2007 General Student Council (GSC) was held on November 15 in Gwangju campus. Kim Huyn-woong (Senior, College of Business Administration) and Kim Yeong-jin (Senior, College of Agriculture & Life Science) ran for election to the GSC for president and vice president. 9,035 students, 55% of eligible CNU voters, participated in the 2007 GSC’s election and the candidates got 7,163 votes (79.39%). The new president Kim said that the he will make an effort to make the GSC gain CNU students’ trust and be an easily accessible organization by its various activities. He also emphasized the GSC would be concerned continuously about the reunification of North and South Korea.


Sky Walker, Win the Robot Wars

    Sky walker, a student study group that belongs to the School of Electronics and Computer Engineering, won the third prize in a contest called SoC Robot Wars held by Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) on October, 21. System on a Chip (SoC) is an idea of integrating all components of an electronic system into a single chip. The team members made artificial intelligence SoC robots under the direction of Professor Kim Young-cheol lasting for three months, and competed in the tank robot section of the contest. The contest has been hosted for the purpose of realizing the potential of intelligent robots using SoC by the KAIST every year.
