Degree Conferment Ceremonies Held from February 21-27

CNU held the 2007 graduation ceremony from February 21 to 27. At these ceremonies, 4,040 students were granted degrees: 149 doctors, 456 masters and 3,435 bachelors. With the intention of making graduation a more significant event previous practice was deviated from with each college holding its own respective ceremony. It attracted public attention that Kang Jung-chaee, CNU president addressed the crowd at the graduation ceremony on Yeosu campus, the first time for such, since the integration of CNU and Yeosu National University last year.

 

Entrance Ceremony of "Lucky" Freshmen

 2007 year's entrance ceremony was held from February 12 to March 2 by each distinct college.?4,074 freshmen entered CNU including 963 at Yeosu campus. As it is the first entrance ceremony since integration, this year’s one was significant. Freshmen enrollment rate increased to 98.6%. Some colleges held their graduation ceremonies to coincide with orientation for incoming freshmen. Such orientation was also held from February 12th to March 2nd during which each respective college introduced various programs and essential information for their freshmen. Meanwhile, Yeosu campus has tried to help freshmen by opening a new homepage (http://cafe.daum.net/yst07) for them. Many undergraduates and freshmen shared certain information through it. This year's freshmen are the class of 2007, so they are called "Lucky" freshmen. In accordance with their lucky name, their university life should be good and lucky.

Plans for CNU’s 55th Anniversary

 This year is the 55th anniversary of CNU’s foundation. Many events are being planned at Gwangju and Yeosu campuses from April 9th to June 8th: naming streets after those who brought glory to CNU, an International Conference Meeting, and bestowal ceremonies for lecture rooms named after those who contributed to the university’s development. These events aim to uplift the profile of CNU as a foundation of education and democratization, and to instill pride in each university member. Detailed programs will be decided at the end of March. In addition, a CNU alumni reunion will be held at Lotte Hotel Seoul on March 22nd for the celebration of its 55th anniversary. Through this event, CNU plans to create a sense of unity as CNU-ians.


Operating Special service for Physically Challenged Students

 CNU will operate a special vehicle for handicapped students from this semester on. It is specially designed and equipped for them to move safely and conveniently around campus.  Planned since last August the service was unveiled at an inauguration ceremony held in front of the University Administration building on February 20 last. Physically challenged students who want to avail of this service should call the Disabled Support Center. The president Kang Jung-chaee said that this service is a beginning in the care for such students. Kim Eun-il who is in charge of the Students Affairs Division said, that he would also make an effort to help these CNU-ians.


CNU students Receive New Abroad Scholarship

   Lee Hwan-su, Overseas Korean businessman in the United States endowed a scholarship to the University of Texas, Dallas (UTD) for CNU College of Business Administration students studying at the university to be granted a dual degree. Lee is from Boseong in Jeollanamdo province and currently the chairman of Chemolee Lab. Ltd.
The scholarship will be donated annually to 10 CNU students who study at UTD from this year on. According to the College of Business Administration, the students have the right to pay not ‘out of state tuition’ but ‘instate tuition’ and receive benefits in various fields. Four students will receive the scholarship this semester and six more are also expected benefit later in the year.

 

Welcome to the World of “CONG”

 CNU Press and Broadcasting Center recently reformed its homepage, now named “CONG” on March 2, 2007. “CONG” which is the abbreviation of CNU Opinion and News Gate will provide news and useful information and provide and reflect public opinion in CNU. Whoever visits CONG can readily access all the contents of CNU Weekly, CUB and Chonnam Tribune. New sections are as follows: “I’m also a Reporter” plans to show only reader generated articles, “Campus Life” gives CNU students useful information about restaurants, accommodation and part time jobs, and “Fun & Up” focuses interest on university living, etc. Visit and enjoy the world of CONG (www.cnumedia.com).
