The winners of the 2023 English Essay Contest were awarded at the awards ceremony held on Nov. 10. The competition was divided into two categories: Non-native speakers and Native speakers from English-speaking countries and countries where English is one of the official languages. It took place in a computer lab at the College of Social Science from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 8. A total of 53 international and Korean undergraduate and graduate students from universities located in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeollanam-do Province participated in the annual event. They wrote their essays without internet access within two hours. The essay topics by category are as follows: “Discuss strategies for student-led media to actively engage with their campus community and contribute to positive change” for the Non-native category and “Discuss whether AI-generated art can be copyrighted” for the Native category.
     The contest awards ceremony took place in a seminar room at the Press and Broadcasting Center located on the second floor of the Student Union 1 building. 14 CNU students and one GIST student were honored at the ceremony. The winners in the non-native category are as follows. The first prize — Kim Hyo-chan (Dept. of Medical Science), the second prize — Ryu Hyun-su (Dept. of Nursing, Graduate School), the third prize — Kwon Min-seong (Dept. of Pre-Medical Science) and Kim Ji-heon (Faculty of Business Administration), and the encouragement prize — Park Ka-ram (Dept. of Earth Science Education), Lee Seung-jun (Dept. of English Language and Literature), Lee Ji-myung (Dept. of Statistics), Jang Hyo-won (Dept. of Software Engineering), Horvath-Gal Hanna (Dept. of Psychology, Graduate School), and Umarov Khojiakbar (Faculty of Business Administration).
     The winners in the native category are as follows. The first prize — Wondimu Kidest Tefera (Dept. of Business Administration, Graduate School), the third prize — Fatima Uroos (Dept. of English Language and Literature) and Kehinde Teslim Ayodeji (School of Mechanical Engineering), and the encouragement prize — Jasper Madalipay (School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology) and Bisht Neha (School of Polymer Science and Engineering, Graduate School).
