Recently, violent crimes such as stabbing rampages near the Sillim subway station and at a department store near Seohyeon station have been on the rise. With a surge in crime, opinions are divided on whether the disclosure of criminals' personal information should be implemented as one of the corresponding measures. It is the people's right to know the identity of a criminal. Without access to basic information about a criminal, one may feel threatened. This is because of the danger posed by criminals, which can lead to other risks, such as retaliatory and additional crimes.
However, the disclosure of criminals’ identities could cause another problem. I think protecting the rights of those who step into crime is what society should do. Most people form a negative image of them when their personal information is revealed, which harms their future even if they return to society after serving time in prison. Also, through the disclosure of personal information, their families and people around them can be negatively affected even if they are not related to the crime.
Punishment for violence such as the disclosure of criminals is necessary, but I think it is also important to try to reduce the root causes of crime. Crime has a huge personal and social impact. Efforts at the level of the social structure are also needed to create a society where everyone can enjoy dignity as a human being against the increasing number of crimes.
