A special exhibition called “The Record of Deulbul (wildfire), Into the Space of Invigoration” has opened at Storium located behind the Library Annex at Chonnam National University (CNU) to uphold the ideals and peaceful spirit of Deulbul Night School and ruminate democratic values. The school was the first labor night school that taught knowledge and labor consciousness. It was led by CNU alumni Park Ki-soon and Yoon Sang-won, the protagonists of the song "Marching for Our Beloved.” It set ‘the realization of human self-esteem’ as its educational goal and also had a well-established educational system that could also be applied to the public education system in Korea in the 21st century. During the May 18 Democratization Movement, when the press was absent in Gwangju, they published the Fighters’ Bulletin to serve as an alternative press and a focal point of resistance.

The exhibition contains the history of the school and the record of publications from Deulbul. It features various forms of displays such as chronicles, photos, videos, and a recreated space representing the classroom of that time. Kim Seung-hyeon (Senior, Dept. of French Language and Literature) who visited the exhibition said, “Through this exhibition, I learned historical facts that I honestly didn’t know before. It was a great experience to feel the atmosphere of that time while having an opportunity to reconsider the history of the May 18.” The exhibition runs until Sept. 27.
