Students of Ewha Womans University protested against the university administration’s decision to establish Light Up Your Future in Ewha College and have gone on sit-down strike demanding the president resign. I think it is hard for the students and the school’s president to reach a compromise due to the lack of communication. The administration should reflect its students’ opinions when it makes important decisions for the university. I cannot understand why the university’s reactions were undemocratic and even violent by asking the police to intervene. This also shows a social problem that educational background is still considered very important for Korean people because it is a protest by the top class university students and graduates. The ultimate cause of the case is the government’s policy to control universities by selectively providing financial support. They definitely said everyone has a chance to receive education at universities, but their actions don’t seem to be different from rich people’s actions for maintaining their social status.
