CNU announced on March 14 that it plans to create a park tentatively named CNU Democracy Park near the Main Gate of Yongbong Campus, which was the starting place of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising in 1980. The purpose of the park is to offer an educational environment and to commemorate all of the victims who were sacrificed in the pro-democracy movements including, the May 18 Democratization Movement, the April 19 Revolution, the June Democratic Movement and the Minchung Hakryeon case in Korean modern and contemporary history. Around the gate, CNU plans to expand the existing May 18 Park and construct a Democratization Movement Commemorative Garden and a Garden of Democracy comprised of a path of democracy, a path of meditation and a grass garden. CNU expects that Gwangju citizens and students will honor the series of pro-democracy movements and raise the esteem of the people who sacrificed themselves to defend democracy in the park. The construction will be finished by June this year and the university is gathering ideas for the design of the park.
