After I read the previous issue, I came to think of the role of a collegiate newspaper. I have been aware of the Chonnam Tribune for a long time. But, when I was in lower grades, I did not think of its role. What is the role of the Tribune? Most of all, the mission of a newspaper is communication. An English newspaper makes the reason more clear. The Chonnam Tribune is the only one that we can communicate with all students including the foreign students at CNU.
Many students have a tendency not to take an interest in campus media because they are too busy in their work. However, if the media would focus on students’ interests, they could attract more readers in various ways. First, create lots of opportunity for readers to meet foreign students. For example, recruit foreign reporters and match them with Korean reporters, and then make them write an article together. Korean reporters would gather news related to foreign students and foreign reporters would have a chance to get more participation in school activities. Secondly, show to students that the Chonnam Tribune is not difficult to access. Many students do not enjoy reading and writing materials in English, but some of them might want to write a short essay. Give them an impression that the Chonnam Tribune is open to every student. If so, students’ interests will grow, and then the Tribune will attract more readers at CNU.
Although students pay little attention to on campus-related news, campus media still has the power of communication. I feel sorry that this good newspaper has been just laid up. Telling the school events, the problems of school, the traditional foods are good. But as a student who loves the Chonnam Tribune, I hope that it can appeal to more students and communicate with them.
