The mandatory meal system in CNU’s Build Transfer Lease (BTL) residence hall will be abolished from the first semester of 2013. With the abolition, residents in the BTL dormitory are not required to pay for three meals a day. The General Student Council (GSC) at CNU filed a student’s complaint on the BTL mandatory meal system to the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) against UDMC, the BTL dormitory operating company on May 21st, 2012 but the FTC rejected it. However, on August 9th, the FTC warned universities that the mandatory meal system was unfair and following this CNU decided to abolish the meal system.  The GSC, Residence Hall Administration Officials and UDMC negotiated the obligatory meal policy several times last year. At first, there were several plans about the meal system, for example, students can choose 1 or 2 meals, or all 3 mandatory meals but they still could not find a middle ground. The CNU Residence Hall Director said, “After the abolishment of the mandatory meal system it is inevitable that the BTL domitory’s meal prices will increase and each meal fee will be higher than before.”
