The Elections for the 2013 General Student Council (GSC) and General Female Student Council (GFSC) at Chonnam National University (CNU) were held from November 13th to 15th. The detailed regulations for the 2013 GSC and GFSC elections were arranged and the executive board of the Central Election Management Committee (CEMC) was organized at the Student Representatives Meeting on September 10th. The CEMC officially announced the formal procedures for the elections on October 14th, thirty days before the Election Day and supervised the election process in order to have a fair and clean election. “The CEMC’s main purpose is to supervise the GSC and GFSC elections and encourage students to take an interest and participate in the election through election promotion activities,” said CEMC’s chairman, Song Seok-yun (Senior, Department of Mathematics Education).
“Action Plus” is running as the sole candidates for the elections. Kim Min-kyu (Senior, Department of Agricultural Economics) and Yang Gun-jae (Senior, School of Business Administration) registered as the candidates for GSC President and Vice President. As for the GFSC, Park Ji-sun (Senior, Department of Forest Resources) is running for President and the Vice President nominee is Park Yu-mi (Senior, School of Business Administration). After their candidacy registration, they started election campaigns including the Public Policy Hearing that happened twice on Yongbong Campus and once on Hakdong Campus.
During the election campaigns the candidates jointly promised that they would be considerate of the students and work hard for students’ welfare. They also said that “We will do better than what they have done this year.” The presidential candidates pledged to fulfill the promise of half-price tuition, to maintain a Direct Election System for the CNU President, and to increase the employment competitiveness of CNU students. They promised to remodel lavatories, to improve the registration system, to develop on-campus crime prevention schemes and to expand student facility usage. At the Public Policy Hearing held on November 8th, Kim Min-gyu, GSC Presidential candidate, explained her plans stating that “We will strive to improve welfare standard for CNU students.” Park Ji-sun, GFSC Presidential candidate said, “We will demonstrate that CNU has the GFSC and endeavor to be friendly to students.” A senior student from the Department of Chemistry who wants anonymity said, “I didn’t see other nominees around my major college, except one nominee during the campaign. I think they need to be more active on a larger scale in order to reach more students.” Kim Hae-mi (Freshman, Department of Nursing) said that “The polling place is too far. My classes are on Yongbong campus all-day long but I have to go to Hakdong campus to vote. It’s inconvenient and unreasonable. Next time if the situation allows it I will vote anywhere at CNU.”
After the campaigns, the GSC and the GFSC elections started on November 13th and were extended until November 15th because of the low turnout. On the first day, the turnout for the GSC was only 38.78%, GFC 41.14% and GSC 49.86%, GFC 52.27% for the second day. After the third election day, the total rate was 53.3%, 8394 out of 15958. The GSC-elect, elected by extended election, said “We will work hard and increase communication with CNU students.” As for the GFSC-elect, they commented that “For the students, we are going to be dedicated to CNU students. Furthermore, we will be a better GFSC by holding various events for students as we said.” We hope the 2013 GSC and GFSC work hard for CNU students and build a better CNU over the next year and good luck.
