His Excellency Ambassador Tran Trong Toan, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Republic of Korea, visited Chonnam National University (CNU) to talk about the future exchanges between Vietnam and the university. The ambassador visited CNU last October 3rd, 2012 and met with CNU Acting President Song Kyung-an where the ambassador promised more mutual exchange cooperation. Tran Trong Toan requested cooperation on the side of the University for Vietnamese students in the areas of faculty exchange, human resource exchange, student exchange and research cooperation amongst others. Acting President Song, on the other hand, promised to offer everything that CNU can provide in order to develop the excellent students from Vietnam to CNU.
According to Cho Young-ran, Asian Exchange Coordinator of the Office of International Affairs-CNU (OIA-CNU), there are currently 87 Vietnamese students at CNU, most of them in the graduate or postgraduate fields. They are the second largest number of foreign students at CNU, next to the number of Chinese students. Most of the students come to CNU under a research scholarship complimented with a professorial scholarship.
CNU holds 13 partnership programs with Vietnamese universities including Hanoi University and Ho Chi Min University. This year, CNU started to invite exchange students from Vietnam and has been actively extending its student exchange programs in the South East Asian region and other parts of the world.
