Chonnam National University (CNU), through the Office of Student Affairs has been operating Multi-culture Mentoring Program for teenagers from multicultural families and North Korean defectors. According to Lee Eun-young, program coordinator, it is operating as one-on-one system. Mostly mentors meet their mentees at mentees' school, but if school is not available, they meet in a public institution nearby. “It is not easy to be close to mentees because they try not to open themselves to their mentors.” Lee said, “Language barrier is a big problem too. However, after 4 months, those problems seems fading away little by little.” Lee hopes to see the improvement not only in their learning ability but also in relationship with other people from every mentees she is taking care of. Kim Na-young (Junior, School of Economics), one of the mentor says she learns from the mentoring program too. She started this mentoring program since August. Her mentee is a middle school student whose father is Korean and mother is Japanese. The reason that makes her participate in this program was her original dream was to be a teacher and she wanted to volunteer about teaching. She teaches English especially grammar to her mentee. Thanks to her instruction and her mentee’s studying, her mentee’s English grade increased from eightieth to twentieth. Also, she often spends her time counseling with her mentee like real sisters. Through this mentoring program, she had responsibility and gave her mentee confidence about studying and stimulation.
