Students’ Basic Rights to Education

By Kim Yeon-yu, Junior, Dept. of English Language and Literature

When the date of course registration comes, students often say, “Good luck with your course registration! You can make it!” Every semester, students have experienced difficulties when registering for their classes. In comparison with registering minor subject classes, registering major classes is much easier because there are more available seats for students. Many students whose minor is English Language and Literature have to bite the bullet and register for classes they do not want to take if they are unsuccessful in registering for the classes that they wanted. This is because they have to take seven major classes of English Language and Literature to graduate. I fell that I have spent my tuition fees meaninglessly because I could not register for the classes I wanted to take. I wanted to take a popular class like Theory of Business or Financial Accounting, but I missed the chance. I think this needs a lot of fortune.
I have had complaints about these situations, However I have never thought that the situation could be improved or solved because most Korean university students are suffering from this kind of difficulties. I was wrong. I realized that this ’course registration war’ could be ended after reading the article entitled with “Course Registration Needs Reform” in the April issue of the Chonnam Tribune. It implied that the course registering system of CNU can be improved by following the example of Korea university’s registering system (Korea university has a central control system for registration and manages all lecture rooms and professors’ schedules in one university office, according to the article). Though I only have 3 semesters left I really hope that I could take the classes that I want as the article mentioned.
