Are You Keeping Promises with Yourself?

By Jung Hyun-young, Head Student Editor

Some days ago, I found my diary that I wrote when I was a high school student. There is a letter to myself, to be read in the future, saying what I wanted to do when I would eventually attend university. Reading my records, I am now deep in thought. I asked myself, “How many promises have been realized?” To tell the truth, I forgot even the fact that I wrote this letter to myself. Through this tiny find, I realized that a plan without practice is just a wish.
Many people, including me, make a new plan when a new year begins. It makes our heart flutter and gives me the expectation that I will develop myself more than before. But, as you know, it is not easy to put an idea into practice. Because of many factors that prevent us from carrying out the plans in our lives, our original goals gradually fade away. Some people are so busy that they even forget their plans which they made, just like I did. Others delay to put an idea into practice because they are quick to give a lame excuse whenever they break the promise, for example, ”I ran out of time…”, “I should finish other work first…” or “I am so tired today.” I think the main reason why we fail to keep the plans we make at the beginning of the year is that we do not make our plans a priority in our lives. We should remember this point easily spoils our plans. I think we need to change not our plan but our everyday lives to achieve our goal. If we do not try to change ourselves according to our plan and will, we will remain in the same position without development for the next 10 years.
Now, a new semester is waiting for us. It is a new chance we can check our plans. Although it is not easy to make a promise with oneself, I believe that you can achieve your goal unless you forget about it and inevitably give up your plan. Whether you are ready or not, put your plan into action. As George S. Patton said, a good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.
