CNU Plans Various Events for Its 60th Anniversary

This year is the 60th anniversary of Chonnam National University (CNU). CNU has organized a Preparatory Committee for the 60th Anniversary Projects and its members identified specific projects in a variety of fields last year. The core idea of the events is ‘Human Creative’ for the future. It means cultivating human resources and glocal (global+local) leaders to coexist and communicate. It is focused on the functions of the university and provision of leading services to the development of the local community. Under the theme of the core idea, many related events were organized in various fields. One of them, the most important event is an academic forum with world-renowned scholars, including Michael Sande, the auther of "Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do?" A variety of events such as alumni artists' performances and exhibitions, sporting events, and memorial celebrations will leave the meritorious spirit of the 60th anniversary on campus.
Also, there are some programs like talent donation campaigns where students and professors donate their talents to local communities. Through those programs, CNUians will contribute to the development of the local community, and feel pride as a member of CNU, a major university of the Honam region. The main theme of the anniversary projects is also extended into local communities beyond CNU campus. CNU has been an important part of its surrounding communities since it was founded.
Yoo Jong-won (Professor, Dept. of Communication), Chairman of the Preparatory Committee of the 60th Anniversary Projects, said, “The goal of the 60th anniversary events is to lead the way for the development of local communities and to expand its presence in the international community through reflecting on our past 60 years. This project will make CNUians look back on the past history of CNU and feel pride as members of CNU. It will be meaningful as each member of CNU has been preparing this for a long time.”
Today, Korean universities are constantly required to reform themselves, and CNU cannot avoid this recent trend. In 2012, CNU’s 60th anniversary will be the turning point for change and development. We can check our position and prepare to jump up to the level of world class universities through the anniversary activities. We have prepared the 60th anniversary for a long time, now it is time for us to put the plan into practice. All the CNUians - students, faculty and staff members - need to have more active concerns and to participate in the anniversary events. If we all think seriously about CNU’s future and our own role this year, we will be able to make CNU with a proud tradition, one of the leading universities in the world beyond Korea.
