When I registered for the essay contest, I thought it’d be a great way to spend a Saturday: curled up at home with some tea, writing about my opinions, listening to Nick Drake. Afterwards I could congratulate myself for being productive. Unfortunately I had other duties calling me on Saturday, and I ended up brainstorming on English immersion education while running around Chonnam University’s campus. I kicked off a man using the computer at the university library, and began typing madly away. My initial stance was that English immersion education was a fantastic idea, because I would gain an advantage over other students. But then I remembered that not everybody’s world revolves around me. It’s an idea that startles me often. In general it wasn’t exactly the cozy, tea-and-music learning experience I’d expected, but I appreciated the opportunity anyway. This contest provides one of the simplest means to display my thoughts in an organized fashion, see my name in print, and receive a certificate and cash at the same time. English immersion programs aren’t the answer, but more online English essay competitions definitely are. By the way, I apologize to the man I hauled off the computer on Saturday.

Now, I Can Buy a Huge Meal for Her!

By Lee Kyung-won, Sophomore, Dept. of Sport Science, Chosun University

It is really great honor to get a grand prize since I did not expect it at all. The true reason why I participated in this essay competition was to treat my girlfriend. My girlfriend and I have been together for about 300 days, but due to my budget constraints I haven’t treated her to dinner at a decent restaurant! Just at the right time, when I studied at the White Library in the Chonnam National University with my girlfriend, I got the information about this Essay Contest by chance. (Thank God!) . It just started: to make money! To tell the truth, I did not expect to win a prize. I just thought “Give it a shot! Trying won’t hurt!” But at the same time, I felt afraid of being evaluated in English. When I crammed to repeat a college entrance exam, English was the weakest subject for me, so I asked a favor of my sister who was majoring in English Language Literature in CNU. She proofread my English lesson and she was cruel! Anyway, I cannot deny her devotion to want to thank the Chonnam Tribune for giving me this great opportunity with such a grand prize. Before I forget, thank you Microsoft Word! You corrected my clumsy words a lot. To sum it up, I am really glad now that I can buy a huge meal for my sweetheart, Eunju!
