As the new school year begins, the cold has decreased in severity and our campus has been filled with warm temperatures and budding flowers. Students’ hearts have started beating with expectations of a new semester. Freshmen in particular seem to be fresh and full of energy. No wonder they seemed that way, now that they can have a new experience called college culture which they haven’t had before. Before entering university, we spent almost all our time at school. We had to take scheduled school classes and obey school regulations. We missed out on the chance to develop according to our own intents and desires. After graduating from school, we will have to get a job and we will be tied down by something again. But, now we have the opportunity to spend our time freely so we should take this opportunity seriously to establish a foundation for our future lives and try to have a successful school experience.
There is no one who dictates what you need to do in university, so you should plan your school life and find information out for yourself. If you can’t adjust to that, you will become self-indulgent and hedonistic, hanging out with friends and drinking alcohol. So, here is some advice I want to give freshman and other undergraduate students as an upperclassman. First, I would suggest that you try to attend out-of-class activities where you are able to meet students from other backgrounds and to be involved in joining clubs, participating in events or doing volunteer work. You can discover what kinds of work or habits are good matches for you through these activities, which would be a good opportunity for your future. You can also make life-long friendships and learn from them. There are lots of programs at our school to involve yourself in. One in particular provides students with financial aid to study abroad. I recommend that you actively take part in them. Secondly, do make an effort to cultivate your intelligence. Read books, think and become absorbed in new ideas and concepts, or acquire a foreign language. Through these processes, you can expand your horizons and it will help you get a job in the future as well as help you live your whole life. Lastly, one thing you should make sure of is that you don’t neglect your own course of study or your grades. Some students ignore how important school grades are and struggle with C+ or F grades. As students, our primary obligation is to be faithful to our study. How hard you study in university will be an element of evaluation for getting a job.
As above, being a university student is very precious stage in your life. Therefore, we need to think about how to fill this period with worthwhile and meaningful memories which you can enjoy for those brief four years. In the beginning of the semester, plan what you will do this semester and think about what you want to do during the rest of your college life. I hope all of you can wisely spend your valuable 4 years while keeping the your present spirit alive.
