‘Present’ has two meanings as a noun: one means “now” and the other means “a gift”. Some people say that the present time is a gift from God. I think what they mean is we should cherish the present as like a precious thing given by God. I previously mentioned in my first desk column: “It is no use crying over spilled milk.” Now I believe that keeping focused on the present is better than being obsessed with the past. Also, I think a bright future is based on living a full life at the present. As you know, we have only about six weeks left until the end of this year. I am not sure I have been adhering faithfully to my plans since the beginning of this year. However, I have decided not to feel distressed about my unaccomplished plans and at the same time I will not complain that I have only a few weeks left. The reason is that I know it is no use complaining about it, and besides, I have “my present”. If I do live my life with all my heart and soul at the present, it will give me a gift in the future. Plus, I believe that a life earnestly lived at the present can be the complement of mistakes made in the past.
Some of you already might have given up your plans because you may think it is too late. In my case, from early on this year, I had planned to finish reading one of the textbooks for my major from cover to cover. This is kind of embarrassing, but honestly, up to now, I have just read the first chapter. However, I will not give up and I’ll try to finish it by the end of this year. You must notice that this year is not over yet and there is still your present. Just like “The Tortoise and the Hare”, a traditional fable, it is not over till it is truly over.
Still now, the present time is passing you by quickly. As you know, it will soon become the past. Therefore, CNUians, please keep going and doing your best to fulfill plans made at the beginning of the year until this coming December 31st. Do not give up your present yet and cherish it like the only opportunity you have!
