Chonnam Tribune, a campus English newspaper published by Chonnam National University (CNU), hosted the 2010 English Essay Contest over a period of four hours on November 6^th, 2010. The contest was open to university and high school students living in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeonnam Province. Foreign students of English as a second language also participated in the contest. Following the format of previous years, the applicants had first to register from October 18 ^th to October 31^st and then they wrote their essay on the topics posted on the CNU Press and Broadcasting Center official website at 2 p.m. on November 6^th. The award ceremony was held at 11 a.m. on November 26 ^th.

The topics were as follows: in the High School Division, “It is recently been announced that corporal punishment was to be banned in all elementary, middle and high school in Seoul from November 1^st. In response to this, some people say that all forms of corporal punishment have to be banned at schools. Others think that corporal punishment needs to be permitted under limited circumstances. Which view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.” In the University Division, “Some students think that the comprehensive activity-focused criteria for selecting scholarship students at the university could prevent students from concentrating on their studies and make our university subordinate to companies. Others think that unlike the academic record-based scholarship system, the scholarship system encourages students to broaden their experiences and helps them to become ready to find jobs after graduation. Which view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.”
