A restored form of the Koreanosaurus (full name is “Koreanosaurus Boseongesis”), which had lived only in what is now Korea, has been revealed to the public by the Korea Dinosaur Research Center (KDRC) at Chonnam National University (CNU) on November 1st. The Koreanosaurus is the first dinosaur which has the word “Korea” in its name and the second dinosaur which has the name composed of Korean following the “Pukyongsaurus Millennium” of the study team of Pukyoung National University. Since the research team of the KDRCenter began to study the dinosaur, it has focused on proving that the dinosaur which had lived only in Korea and named it which use the Korean. The team had found part of the fossil remains in Bosung, Jeollanam-do, 7 years ago and had participated in the excavation to recover the dinosaur’s figure. The research team composed of Dinosaur researchers, arts majors and computer animation majors participated in this project for 7 years, and finally succeeded in recovering the fossilized figure of the dinosaur and named the dinosaur “Koreanosaurus Boseongensis” last month and appeared in a prestigious German geology journal Neues Jahrbuch fur Geologie und Palaontologie which boasts 200 years of publications and had a great opportunity to introduce “Koreanosaurus Boseongensis” to the whole world. This dinosaur was herbivorous, about 1 meter tall and about 2.5 meters long, weighing in at about 100 kilograms. They lived on the southern coast of Korea during the Late Cretaceous Period, which ran from 99.6 million to 65.5 million years ago. They had a sharp shape of its head and penetrating eyes and seemed to use four legs because their length was similar. Kim Jung-kyun, a member of the Research Center, said, “Koreanosaurus is the result of 7 years of study. The digging process of restoring project was tough, but all team members made zealous efforts and we finally accomplished this result.” If you want to watch the restored form of the Koreanosaurus, you can visit the KDRC. It is located near the CNU main athletic fields on CNU Gwangju campus.
