원하는 게 무엇이든.. 주저하지 말자!

Nowadays we see a lot of university students doing extracurricular activities like study groups and voluntary service works. Most are taking part in these activities to build their ‘spec’, getting experience that will help them get a job. Most students regard building the spec as a natural activity for university students. However, it is rare to see students doing joining unique clubs, or starting peculiar hobbies that are not relevant to their spec. Perhaps students hesitate to try those activities because they think such things may become obstacles in getting a job. So they avoid trying activities they may find interesting and charming, maybe even dreamed of trying when they were in high school. I agree that we cannot neglect our future and building the spec is important.
However, I would like to raise one question with you. When you decide to give up activities you like and only focus on your spec, how do you feel? Do you feel happy? I don’t think so. I have one friend who wanted to join a fencing club. It was his dream since his high school days. He boasted he would join the club as soon as he entered university. Unfortunately, he gave up on his dream, he didn’t even try. When he was a freshman, he had to hang out with his friends. After he was discharged from military service, he had to build his spec. As I looked back at how he had given up his dream, I felt sorry for him. I thought he could try it now, but he did not. He just gave up the chance and tried not to fall behind the others.
Some may say focusing on spec is one of the strategies for survival in this competitive world, so joining “the wrong” clubs is a lavish use of time. I understand that. However, I hope my friends never give up their happiness and sense of adventure. I am sure they can succeed no matter what they do.
