How Do Reporters Spend Two Weeks?

By Park Hyo-gyeong, Student Editor

Chonnam Tribune always has tried to provide up-to-date news and useful information and to generate opinions about campus issues at CNU for 42 years since 1968. In this issue in commemoration of the 42nd anniversary of the foundation, Chonnam Tribune takes time to introduce the process of newspaper publication so as to get closer to you. As our newspaper is a bi-weekly tabloid newspaper, as the Tribune reporters we have to produce it within two weeks. Do you ever wonder how Tribune reporters spend about 14 days to make the newspaper? I will tell you our story for two weeks. Now let’s step into the process with me. You are able to observe the entire newspaper production process as if you are participating in the process yourself as a reporter.
▲ Editorial meeting
On Friday night, we usually begin with checking the list of articles assigned to each reporter and theirs temporary deadlines for a next issue set by head student editor with help of executive editor on the notice board of our homepage. After then, we should do write article plans for the editorial meeting on next Monday, after preliminarily researching for news and story ides or subjects by using mass media and the Internet, and asking people around us. During the meeting we have every other Monday, we present plans for the assignment articles respectively, discuss about ideas and topics, and adopt news and topics for each article. And then we set final deadlines.
▲Interviewing
On Tuesday, we start to gather news from particular sources and cover events in/outside our university. The way how to report articles depends on the character of articles, news articles or feature stories, but generally we have to meet and interview several people involved in some events or situations. At that time we take pictures by ourselves and leave them by photos. Sometime the interviews are conducted over the phone and via email. We have a lot of difficulties in gathering news and interviewing many sources. Then, we try to write articles immediately after covering stories to meet the deadlines. In case that we need more information of the news events and stories, we should go out to have supplementary coverage. After finishing the first drafts, we should send them to have feedbacks from student editors.
▲ Writing
On Monday, we have a meeting to assign additional requirements and photographs to some reporters and to check how many articles can meet the deadlines. We are assisted by editors and an English adviser to complete the final versions of our articles: student editors often make reporters revise the same articles several times for better ones. Next, an executive editor on staff and an English advisor who works for our newspaper advise how we might improve the articles in content and structure with corrections and suggestions. For this editing process, it takes about seven days that we complete our articles and captions, but we can give good articles to you.
▲ Copyediting
On Wednesday, we select some among the articles which are uploaded to our web serve after completion and organize newspaper layout, because all the articles we wrote are not reported in the newspaper. On Wednesday afternoon, external graphic designers start to design our newspaper. Next day, we copyedit the newspaper several times while checking typographical errors and misspelled words. Our copyediting continues until Friday afternoon when the English adviser proofread a hard copy of our newspaper once more. Finally we finish the entire process of current issue, and start to prepare for next issue. On every other Monday you can read the Chonnam Tribune on campus, we have our publication appraisal and discuss on how to improve our performance for a better newspaper next time. You can also read the articles in our homepage. (Don’t you know our address? Here is the address: http://www.cnumedia.com)
Through this process, we learn the basic elements of journalism and know about good reporting skills, basic photography composition and much more. We will continue to make effort to provide news, useful information and interesting stories and to listen to your voice. When we discover that readers are reading our newspaper, we feel really great and proud of ourselves forgetting some troubles we had. But there is just one thing we want to our readers. We hope that you would feel familiar to us and give your interest in Chonnam Tribune. We always welcome your opinions.
