일상생활에서 시너지 효과를 높이자!

You may have seen migratory birds making a ‘V’ line in the sky when they move in groups. Do you know why birds move in that way? The reason is very simple and it makes me feel amazing. By flying in groups, they can reach their destination about 71 percent faster than a single bird. Birds flying at the head of the ‘V’ generate air movement which makes it easier for the following birds to fly. The following birds encourage the head birds with loud cries. It can be said they achieve ‘synergy’.

We can find ‘synergy’ in our daily life as well. Students have many chances to work in group and play games with other persons such as baseball, soccer and basketball. The results will be greatest if each team works together smoothly and harmoniously at all times. However, we already know that too many cooks can spoil the broth. As a team consists of various members who have their own personality, maybe it is the essential problem of teamwork. However, it is not an obstacle but a driving force of teamwork. What do you think of a person who has the opposite view from you? Is he or she wrong? This person is just different from you, not wrong. Differences can help a team generate synergy. So it is important to acknowledge that diversity is the first step for synergy.

When you try to synergize your team, you also take care of another thing: just one person’s indolence may cause the whole team to fail. Imagine playing soccer. If a player fiddles around, doing nothing during the game, what will happen to the team? Although other players do their best, the game is far from being played well. This is one of the most common situations that arise during teamwork. When I took a liberal arts class, I had to make a group presentation with several members. Unfortunately, I prepared the presentation with just one member, and the other members were indifferent to it. When doing teamwork, it is a serious problem if all team members only stick to their opinions but it is also a serious problem if there are idle members. So, all the members have to carry out their responsibilities to the fullest.

Above all, an open mind is fundamental to creating synergy. An open-minded attitude, needless to say, includes understanding, consideration, and listening carefully to other people. Chonnam National University Press & Broadcasting Center is currently making an effort to generate synergy among Chonnam Tribune, Chonnam National University Biweekly and Chonnam National University Broadcasting. We have already completed more than half of this semester. I hope our project is successful with all the center members’ collaborating to make ourselves worth more than just the sum of our parts.
