What Should It Do for Us?

#287 Howdy, CNUians?

The election of the 42nd General Student Council (GSC) of Chonnom National University (CNU) was held on November 25th. Students hope that as a representative group of students, the GSC will pay attention to students’ opinions and try to reflect their demands. If not, they may not support the GSC. Chonnam Tribune asked students’ opinion about the activities of the 41st GSC and their expectations for the next GSC. – Ed.

“Hold More Seminars and Conferences for Students”

“Have More Concerns about Students’ Welfare”

“Have Interest in Problems on Campus”

“Create CNU’s Own Cultural Events”

Shim Hyun-jung, Junior, Division of Animal Science
I actually do not know everything the GSC has done, but I think that the GSC has worked very hard operating various events. The GSC has strived to support cultural events that students want. There are many programs and events, and the most impressive event was the Yongbong Daedongpulli festival arranged by the GSC. However, for the last three years, I felt the festival was very similar and boring. I hope the GSC can create special features that only CNU festivals have, and then it will create a better campus festival culture.

Choi Ji-min, Junior, Dept. Clothing and Textiles
As the former president of my department’s council, I know that the GSC has worked very hard and its members have done the best they could do. However, they seemed to devote their efforts to solving outside problems rather than affairs on campus. During the early stage of the GSC’s term of office, it made an effort to communicate with students and to solve their problems. But now, it concentrates on political issues. Of course, university students should get interested in social and political situations, but they are just students not statesmen. I wish that the next GSC would strive to meet students’ demands and realize what students really want. It is good to make beneficial programs which can help students develop themselves.

Choi Mi-gone, Sophomore, Dept. of Electrical Engineering
I think the GSC should support students’ autonomous and extracurricular activities in departments’ councils and clubs. I think the GSC’s present support for such activities and students’ welfare is not enough. My club has hardly received material support from the GSC. In addition, the GSC seems to have more interests in political and social issues than students’ welfare and affairs on campus. Most students, including me, tend to be interested in things that relate to them directly. If the next GSC is more concerned for students’ welfare and makes an effort to improve it, it could become a better students’ association.

Kim Han, Freshman, Dept of Geography
During the last semester, the 41st GSC made efforts to lower the rate of increase in tuition fees. I was impressed by their work. They worked passionately and finally succeed in lowering it. However, I think that although the GSC was trying to solve the problem, they seemed to overdo it. There were many placards posted by the GSC, and their slogans were too cynical, and at times even offensive. It made me uncomfortable. So I want the GSC to hold more seminars and conferences for students so that they may know what the GSC is doing and how the GSC is working.
