It’s a new semester! Looking for something fresh? New challenges? Something to make life a little more exciting? If so, why not explore some of the clubs at Chonnam National University (CNU)? They will help you lead a more active campus and social life. Here are four charming clubs that play an active part in the field of creative arts.

  OCC, Open Cartoon Chang

Open Cartoon Chang (OCC), one of CNU’s cartoon clubs, started as a small group in 1986. It consists of students who are interested in not only drawing but reading cartoons as well. Now, its main goal is drawing comic books, but it also aims to train cartoonists and people who want to work in the field of animation. During the semester, all members of the OCC will get drawing training from their seniors once every other week. They have a regular meeting at 6 pm everyday and share information about forthcoming events and talk over their school lives. Their main activities are divided into two parts, the newcomers’ open exhibition every May, and a regular exhibition in which all club members display their work in order to show their improvement over the course of the year.. After both events, they will have a competitive show to evaluate all members’ works. Club members are often requested to draw cartoons and characters for festivals at CNU. The leader of this club, Choi Eun-young (Sophomore, School of Food and Nutrition) said, “I would like CNUians to be more enthusiastic for what they want to do during their campus life. Actually, our club room’s door is always open to all of you. Don’t hesitate. Just knock on the door.”

  Zoom, Photography Club
Zoom is a photography club which has been around for over 36 years. The club has a unique culture, all members call their seniors “brother” regardless of their gender. It may help to promote a friendly relationship among club members. They have regular meetings in their club room. In those meetings, they share their experiences related to taking pictures, prepare the next photo-taking trip and report on upcoming events. They display their work annually in two photo exhibitions. One exhibition, held in June, is meaningful to them because it is a joint exhibition with Keimyung University’s Photo Art Club. The other, held in November, displays black and white photographs. Zoom has a well-equipped darkroom where its members can develop and print their film. During summer vacation, newcomers can learn how to work in the darkroom for the exhibition in November, and how to set up lights in a photo studio. The former president, Yang Sun-feel (Senior, Dept. of Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences) said, “A lot of people are worried about the burden of obtaining photographic equipment. Don’t worry. If you join our club, we will provide you with all the necessary equipment until you can arrange your own gear. Just come check us out.”

CNUDC, Chonnam National University Drama Club
Chonnam National University Drama Club (CNUDC) has a long history with 47 years of tradition and presents plays, giving students a chance to experience life in the theater. All members of CNUDC make a great effort to improve their knowledge of drama and personality via three performances every year. They complete the whole process of developing a play, practicing, setting the stage and performing by themselves. Through such activities all members can obtain skills required to present a play. CNUDC has made remarkable achievements in their field. In 1995, their work “Nangjagoon” was awarded the grand prize on the
University Theater Festival (UTF) and was subsequently sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development. It also has been recognized for its ability with its production of “Shin.” In ordinary meetings, they rehearse plays for prearranged performances. In the first semester, CNUDC focuses on preparing play workshops for new members and putting on the first play. Now, the performance on the street, the play for the UTF and the second performance are in progress. The president of CNUDC, Jung Hun-sik (Sophomore, Dept. of Pre-veterinary Medicine) said, “I’ve seen many people who hesitate to join our club because they think that a play is unfamiliar to their real life. It is not true. Why don’t you join us for a play? Don’t hesitate.”

  IL, Imagination Lab
Imagination Lab (IL) is a club which focuses on making movies unlike other movie clubs that aim to watch movies at CNU. It focuses on acquiring knowledge and practical experience about how to make a movie. Many members of the club are skilled in film making; most have been interested in making movies prior to joining this club. If you join this club, you can experience all aspects of making a film. Newcomers will learn about movie production through classes offered by their seniors. Recently the club has participated in making an independent feature -length film entilted “The Syndrome from Memory to Remembrance,” which is the first work to be produced in Gwangju, and stars Kim Ggock-bee, a famous actor in short films. There are no requirements to enter the IL. The only thing you need to have is passion for film making. The leader Huh Ji-eun (Junior, Dept. of Korean Language and Literature) said, “Club activity is not useless. It can make you into a new person that is energetic and eager to do everything. It will be a great opportunity to make a good film with club members. We hope to see you as soon as possible in my club room.”
