Chonnam National University (CNU) has offered useful programs to make their students improve their English skills and provide an opportunity to enhance their global ability in the international environment. Now, as part of its effort, the Office of International Affairs (OIA) will administer the CNU International Summer Session (ISS) from June 18th to July 13th, 2009. Through the ISS, international and domestic students can improve their learning ability and make foreign friends by studying in the same classrooms.

All classes of the ISS will be taught in English; all the students who want to participate in the ISS are required to communicate in English with teachers and other students in the classrooms. Except for this language proficiency requirement, admission to the ISS is open to anyone studying at universities, especially those of whom study at sister universities of CNU. It consists of twelve classes which include Calculus, Financial Economics, Introduction to Western Classics and Integrated Environment-Friendly Architectural Design, which are selected after screening requests for a class opening from every college at CNU.

In order to attract more students of foreign sister universities, tuition and accommodation will be offered to them free of charge. Some sister universities in China and Taiwan have showed interest in the ISS after hearing about its opening and answered that they are willing to send some students to CNU. CNU students who want to take these classes are able to apply for the ISS in the same way as registering for summer session because it is a kind of summer session admitted at CNU. Foreign students can submit the online application using the website of the OIA (international.jnu.ac.kr.) until May 27, 2009.

International students can join the program entitled “Visitation of Culture” which is sponsored by the Gwangju International Center. In addition, the OIA plans to on two occasions hold meetings to definitely form special bonds between foreign and Korean students. Korean students can also participate in the field activities if they would like to visit some tourist attractions and enjoy time with foreign students.

Kim Sye-jeong, the officer in charge of the ISS, eloquently declares, “The most significant goal of the ISS 2009 is to advertise CNU to other nations in the world as one of the best national universities in Korea. CNU, as a local national university, has received a low level of awareness compared to other universities located in the Seoul area. The ISS is expected to have plenty of advertising effects through foreign students and professors as they tell of good experiences of the ISS life to their acquaintances. Our short- term aim is to record a thirty percent ratio of foreign students. As far as I know, the rate of composition between Korean and foreign professors who are lecturing classes (5:5) is pretty appropriate for its program and it is really suitable for the condition of our university. It seems to make a nice harmony that we have never seen so far because we have never simultaneously invited this number of foreign professors.”

It will be an important stepping-stone to be able to upgrade to the world level of CNU as well as it will come in handy to enhance the ability of all participants. CNU hopes to see many students participate in accordance with their purpose.
