2008 Asian Youth Culture Camp

The '2008 Asian Youth Culture Camp' was held from October 30th to November 1st at Chonnam National University (CNU) with the theme of 'Asia, Culture and Environment'. The camp was hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Gwangju International Center. CNU and the United Nations Environment Program sponsored the camp. It was designed for promoting participation of Asian students in the Hub City of Asian Culture Project and recognizing the importance of interchanging activities among Asian students. Sixty two students from ten countries were involved. The participants had discussions on various projects and had some excrusions around Gwangju, including Biennale Hall, Mudeung Mountain and the National Cemetery for the May 18th Gwangju Democratic Uprising. It is expected that participants would inform Korean efforts for Asian cultural exchange and introduce the project to their countries.

 


CNUDH’s New Start

The CNU Dental Hospital (CNUDH) and School of Dentistry (SD) moved to Yongbong campus from CNU Hospital in Hakdong campus and started medical examinations and treatment on November 17th. In celebrating the opening the new CNUDH and SD Building, an international symposium was held on November 1st, and many famous speakers from other countries including Japan, Canada, England, Thailand and America addressed new trends in dental science. Moreover, CNUDH has been operating various programs such as academic and public lectures in relation to dentistry and medical volunteers. The new building was equipped with advanced medical treatment facilities and research systems with medical specialists and graduate students. CNUDH is expected to offer more improved medical treatment to its patients. The formal ceremony of moving and the opening of CNUDH will be held in March, 2009.

 


CNU Students’ Successive Prize-winnings

Last month, two students in the Department of Clothing and Textiles won prizes at famous contests. Joe In-soo (Senior) won the Golden Prize with denim that he designed in “the Second FUBU Creative Festival Contest” on October 26th. Another student, Woo Seong-geon (Sophomore) won the Silver Prize as part of women’s jackets in “the Tenth Korea Apparel Technique Promotion Competition Contest” on October 16th. They said their professors’ support was very helpful for winning and the classes of the department offers as well because they used to make cloth from drawing patterns and practice sewing by taking classes in their department. Joe In-soo said, “I have got confidence after participating in the contest. I want to tell CNU students who hope to challenge contests. Don’t hesitate to try. Don’t be afraid to fail, just give it a try with confidence!”
