We Need to Make Our Campus Clean

By Ryu Seung-hyi, Student Editor

Every March, you can see various types of club posters everywhere on campus. It is because many clubs mainly use posters as a way of campaigning to recruit new members from the freshmen class. They put up many posters saying "Join our club" on bulletin boards, pillars and even on the street. However, most club members who attach posters all over campus do not take them off after the campaigning period ends and remnants have spoiled the beauty of our campus. There are also several things which do not make our campus too pleasant. Let's check our campus environment with Chonnam Tribune.

Our Campus Is Unpleasant

There are many places at CNU that are offered for students and most students use them freely every day. The freedom of using CNU facilities accompanies a responsibility with it. Nevertheless, many places on our campus are used by many CNU students with neglect and irresponsibility. Especially, the main places which many students use everyday, lecture rooms, roads, lawns and bulletin boards are not clean.

Most lecture rooms are dirty because numerous students use them without paying any attention to care. Dumped paper cups and trash are on the floor of many lecture rooms. That is because many students put their leftovers on the seat unintentionally. Even so, students do not care much, even though there is a broken chair in the lecture room. If you take a look at the inside of a lecture room, many desks and walls are inscribed with scribbling and graffiti. They are related to lecture contents written with pencils and pens. Ryu Min-jeong who has studied in a room filled with graffiti said, "When I study at a desk which is full of scribbling, I can't concentrate on my work and I feel unpleasant. University students are not immature. So I think they should be considerate for other people like an adult.”

Likewise, school grounds are messy. Although there is scattered trash in most places, we hardly see anyone who picks up the trash while walking on the campus among CNU students. It is also hard for us to see smokers who throw away their cigarette butts in provided receptacles after smoking. If you closely examine the school grounds, you will easily find a lot of cigarette butts and they are even found in flower gardens inside campus. Usually, students who smoke throw away butts anywhere carelessly. These things have spoiled the beauty of campus and make us and outsiders who visit CNU frown.

The bulletin boards which many students use for posting or getting information is also one of the
reasons campus is tainted. Actually, utilizing the bulletin board is a way of communication among students and is a good tool to exchange information to each other. So, we can consider this phenomenon as university culture. However, too many notices flood many bulletin boards and this looks quite messy. What is more, there are students who attach their notices on non-designated places like school grounds or pillars and do not remove them, thereby adding more work for cleaners to accomplish. Han Hyun-jun (Freshman, Dept. of Applied Plant Science) said, "I think that a wall full of notices spoils the beauty. It is a kind of environmental pollution to students who are not interested in that information. I hope students do not attach their posters and such types of bills seem to have no effect and end up in the trash. Students need to do pay attention to these things properly."

What Makes Our Campus Messy?

As mentioned above, most of all study places, the school grounds and bulletin boards are untidy and these can be a form of environmental pollution at CNU. However, if we look deeper into this phenomenon, most students are taking part in polluting the campus environment in one way or another at CNU. There are several reasons why our campus environment is polluted.

Firstly, one of several reasons is a lack of awareness by students. Most places at CNU are used by CNU students. Using a metaphorical expression, CNU is your home and desks and chairs are yours and you cannot scribble on the wall of your home.

Secondly, many students do not put into practice the creating of a pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere on campus. For a comfortable environment on campus, CNU should place litter boxes and garbage cans on every floor of each college. Litter boxes are classified according to types of waste, for example, paper, plastic, can and other garbage. However, some students insensibly throw away their wastes everywhere while walking on school grounds. To think like "It's only me" is a selfish attitude that is destroying a clean campus.

Putting notices on improper bulletin boards also damages buildings. One staff of the Division of General Affairs said that only notices can only be posted on permitted bulletin boards designated by the division, but most students refuse to stick to the rules. "Look at Student Union Hall I. It looks awful. Putting the poster on the walls and pillars, which are not designated places, makes dirty marks and takes the paint off of the building. Please keep the rules."

Our Small Practice Is a Critical Need

Like this, surely, most students who do not care about our campus environment are responsible and this makes CNU impossible to improve the environment. However, we can make a pure campus if we make a little more effort. One way to do this is to change our attitude from carelessness to owner awareness about our university. Baek Du-in, Captain of the Division of General Affairs also emphasizes that we, students, professors and staff, should consider our university as our home. "The work that CNU can do for cleaning is installing recycling stands separating garbage from recycling wastes. We can also try to increase the number of bulletin boards for students' information exchange.” And he added, “It is a matter for regret that students make campus soiled, but we just hope that many students recognize the condition of the campus environment and try little by little for a better environment.”

It is important for students to be people of action. We can not solve this pollution problem at once by making and applying some rules. If one person loves and takes care of our school and starts taking small actions, the person’s attitude toward school spreads to other people more and more. It will be one CNU culture and CNU will be cleaned naturally. Let us take care to make our campus more clean and comfortable and put these ideas into practice by starting to dispose of wastes properly.
