 Letters to Chonnam Tribune

Chonnam Tribune Beside Us

Park Su-san, Senior, Dept. of Science Education
What on earth is it? The previous issue’s cover photo freaked me out! I even had a heated discussion on this horrible “Baron Asura” who is a fictional character from the TV anime Mazinger Z with my roommate. We could not come to any conclusion on what its real gender is. Chonnam Tribune is an awesome magazine. To my regret, I cannot see the next issue on campus because I will graduate next month.

It is not easy for us to come in regular touch with English after high school graduation. We should improve our English ability, especially for employment after graduation. Most university students are apt to study English and then they buy books, memorize a couple of words a day and take English tests continuously like the TOEIC or TOFEL in order to foster English ability. Let's not try to study like this. It is a good idea to pick up Chonnam Tribune, which is good material for studying English and gives both useful information and good advice for campus life. It also provides you many fun things like “Puzzle” where you can participate. Come on, pick it up!

Thanks for Your Effort

Han Gyeong-mun, Junior, Dept. of Life Science
Before watching a movie, I read movie-goers’ reviews to obtain information and to see their opinions about it. I found a really high quality movie review in the November issue of Chonnam Tribune. The “Review” on the film Happiness was very impressive and helpful for me to understand the movie well.

I also would like to give the magazine staff a big hand as they gave us wonderful information on diverse topics ranging from entertainment to social issues. Thanks to their efforts, we readers can get a lot of useful information and others’ opinions about particular issues on and off of our campus. Though I nearly know the whole publication process, it must be difficult that they develop publication plans, get news from many sources and write articles. I hope it is helpful to publish the Chonnam Tribune to both them and its readers.

Time to Think with an Open Mind

Kim Hyeon-ji, Freshman, School of Biological Science and Technology

After reading the article, “Cover Story: Jumping into Gender Diversity”, in the previous issue, I think we should always keep an open mind while thinking about a particular issue like gender in the period of socio-cultural change. Society has never been fixed, but rather in a state of continuous transformation since the beginning of time.

Is it good to recognize gender conception as our traditional convention, or to go beyond binary gender-based stereotypes? It is easy to find similar trend relating to fixed stereotypes in broadcasting media. Most of the audience likes unrestricted and amusing TV announcers in variety shows rather than formal and disciplined ones in news programs. It is the fact that the audience’s expedition to TV announcers was different in old days.

Stagnant pools of water will become spoiled. If we want to make a progress every day, we must throw away outdated and absurd conventions and renovate the old things for a better future. It is now time to think about recent trends in our society from various points of view. Reading last issue of Chonnam Tribune, I have taken the time to think about this matter.
