On December 6, CNU and the NHRC signed an agreement to perform human rights education programs, collaborate on human rights and share human rights data. Especially, the college of law opened the public human rights law center.

CNU was appointed as the first university for human rights education and investigation by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK). On December 6, CNU and the NHRC signed an agreement to perform human rights education programs, collaborate on human rights and share human rights data. Especially, the college of law opened the public human rights law center. Ahn Kyong-whan, chairperson of the NHRC, said, “The most important thing for improving human rights is education. I expect CNU to play an important role in the field of human rights education.”

 

 

IECC Winning Prizes at the 2006 KINPEX

CNU Industry Education Cooperation Center (IECC) was awarded two prizes at the 2006 Korea Invention and Patent Exhibition (KINPEX), which was hosted by Korea Invention Promotion Association and sponsored by the Korean Intellectual Property Office from Dec. 7 to Dec. 11. Head of the IECC, Lim Young-cheol (Prof. of Dept. of Industrial Engineering) won the gold prize for inventing ‘the method and device to control the Hysteresis Gap of a kimchi refrigerator', and Oh Jong-suk (Prof. of Dept. of Medical School) won an encouragement prize for the of invention for 'a lactobacillus to prevent bad breath'. The IECC was founded in order to financially support CNU professors’ research and invention and also to prepare their patent applications in 2004.

 

 

Global Internship Program Starts in January 2007

    CNU Research Group for Global Korean & Culture (RGGKC) operates a Global Internship Program (GIP) using Global Korean Business Network (GKBN) for students of the college of social sciences. The RGGKS selected sixteen students on December 26, and they will participate in the orientation course for the GIP in January and take their internships in China, Japan, Russia and Central Asia for two months from January of 2007. Kim Jae-gi, researcher professor of the RGGKC said, “Through this program, the participants will improve their competitiveness and also can get new and useful information from these countries. Moreover, the GIP will promote the development of local industries and cooperation between local and overseas enterprises.” This Internship program is one of the core programs of the GKBN and Korean Culture Community, which were selected as Korea Research Foundation’s Basic Studies Supporting Project in 2003.

 

 

CNU Selects New Students

CNU selects new students through two entrance examinations, a special one as the occasion demands and a regular one. In case of the special exam, CNU received applications from October 9 to 12, and the students passing the primary examination had an in-depth interview at each college on December 1. After this interview, Byeon Ho-in, an applicant for entrance to the Dept. of Communication said, “I was nervous when I was in front of the examiners, and I was also extremely excited to become a university student. My various experiences during high school were very helpful to select my major.” Out of the 1,953 students who applied to CNU, 1,724 applicants (1,307 to Gwangju campus and 417 to Yoesu campus) succeeded in the entrance exam on Dec. 16. CNU received applications over 5 days from December 21 to 26 for the regular entrance examination. Applicants will have an in-depth interview at their respective college on January 15, 2007.

 

 

Launch of natural dyeing business

The team of Shin Youn-sook (Prof. of the Dept. of clothing and textile) was selected a National Reserved Laboratory leader by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MST). Shin’s team has been studying various fields of natural dyeing skills related to textile, clothing, and design. They have been trying to standardize the colors of naturally-dyed fabrics and foster natural dyeing as a high value-added strategic business for several years. The team plans on making products containing antibiotic nano-particles. They hope that the technique to extract dyes from natural resources will be useful not only in the textile industry but also in food, interior-design and cosmetic industries. The MST will support the team financially with 150million won of annual funding for 5 years. Natural dyeing is expected to both maintain a traditional craft and become a new export industry.

 

 

Han Ju-hyon, The First Prize Winner at the 5th MECC

Han Ju-hyon (Senior, Dep. of Business Administration) was awarded the first prize at the 5th Market-Economy Column Contest (MECC) sponsored by the Center for Free Enterprise from Nov. 6 to Nov. 10. He wrote a column about a common perception of Samsung. He insisted that it was not necessary to have a negative attitude towards Samsung. He said, “While I wrote my column for the contest I considered that I have poor ability. So, I didn’t expect to win the prize. When I checked the list of winners, I couldn’t believe that I got the prize. I owe my prize to my academic advisor, Prof. Chung Ki-hwa, who helped my work and fixed the errors in my column.” He added, “I’d like to say to CNU students, ‘If I can do whatever I want with my life then so can all of you!”
