Student Representatives Conference

 

  A conference of student representatives was held at the auditorium in the College of Humanities Building No.3 on Sep. 6th last. 125 out of 402 student representatives attended it. It has been seven years since a Fall Semester Conference was last held. Each group including the GSC (General Student Council) presented account statements for the first half of the year ended. The attendants elected Kim Tae-hyun (junior, Ethics Education) as chair of the audit and Oh Yong-eun (senior, Korean Lang. & Lit.) as chair of the election management committee. They also pledged to make Daedong Festival successful.

 

CNU Promotes the Foundation of a Graduate School Specializing in Culture

  CNU submitted an official document for the proposed foundation of a graduate school specializing in culture to the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHR) on Aug. 23rd. All that is left to do now is administration work as CNU awaits the approval of the MEHR. If it is accepted, it will be the first graduate school in Korea to specialize in culture. CNU will serve an important role in leading Gwangju as a center of Asian culture. The graduate school will have three departments: MA (Master of Arts), MCTP (Master of Culture & Tours Planning), and MCT (Master of Culture & Technology). According to the plan, 70 doctors will be newly employed and will start work in 2007.

 

 CNU conferred 1,339 degrees

 

  CNU held the 2005 summr graduation ceremony on August 26th. 1,339 students graduated as follows: 1 honorary doctoral degree, 76 doctoral degrees, 357 master’s, 894 bachelor’s, 10 honorary bachelor’s, and 1 credit bank bachelor’s. Of particular note was the fact that CNU conferred honorary bachelor degrees on 10 students removed from the college on charges of participating in the May 18th Democracy Movement as activists: Ko Dae-ho(42, Commerce Education), Sung Chan-sung(54, English Lang. & Lit.), Hwang Jung-hee(41, English Lang. & Lit.), Lee Hyung-gak(40, Korean Lang. & Lit.), Jung Sam-su(46, Korean Lang. & Lit.), Lee Jae-suk(40, Chinese Lang. & Lit. ), Jo Jin-hyung(40, Chinese Lang. & Lit.), Jung Jung-sub(40, Chinese Lang. & Lit.), and Chae Bong-hue(40, Dept. of Physics) along with the late Park Ki-sun(Korean History Education). In doing so the reputations of these men were redeemed, an event made possible by the fact that the relevant authorities now recognize the May 18th Democracy Movement and those concerned with it.

 

CNU & Dongwon Scholarship Foundation launches and presents scholarship

 

  At 2p.m. of September 2nd , the CNU & Dongwon Scholarship Foundation, which was founded with the aid of a billion won from Dongwon Corporation, held a ceremony in celebration of its foundation and scholarship presentation at the Main Office.  Kang Jung-chaee, President of CNU and Kim Jae-chul, Chair of Dongwon Corporation, presented scholarships to 10 students. The criteria for choosing scholarship students, was very strict indeed. GPA, extra-curricular voluntary work, sense of life-values, records of prizes and planned contributions for the development of CNU and the community were all taken into consideration. The foundation will select 10 students annually and give 5,000,000 won to each student from this year on. President Kim Jae-chul said, “I am happy to contribute to the community even though the donation fund is not that much. And also I wish it may be a help to President Kang, as by taking part in his project we may make CNU a world renowned university.”

 

CNU to Receive Two Billion Won Research Fund from KRF

  On announcing the schemes for fostering the basic sciences on Sept 6th, The Korean Research Foundation (KRF) declared that 17 research projects were chosen at CNU. Accordingly, CNU will get 2 billion won from the KRF. To be more specific, 5 projects were chosen from the Humanities & Social Science fostering scheme, and about 8 hundred million won will be given to them. From the Basic Science fostering scheme, 9 projects will be granted funding of about 3 hundred million won. From the Pure Basic Study Group, 3 research projects will also get about 8 hundred million won in funding. Compared to the13 hundred million won which CNU received last year, the total amount that CNU receives this year has increased by 55.8% with the selected research projects also increasing in number from 11 to 17. It is expected that the financial support will greatly encourage and strengthen the intellectual infrastructure of CNU.

 

Daedong Festival held successfully

 

  A glorious Daedong Festival was held on every corner of CNU campus from September 28th to 30th. The festival contained various events including an open yard bar, a traditional marriage ceremony, a marathon race and so on. Students were greatly attracted to the opening ceremony by the host singer, Big Mama.  She livened events up greatly and made the campus hot. Park Han-kyun, president of the GSC (General Students Council) said, “We did our best to make the festival a success. Thanks to the students’ active participation, the festival has become even more exciting than we had expected.”
