Searching for Words of Wisdom

By Park Ha yeon, Tribune Repoter

In this issue, the Tribune interviewed professors to find out their thoughts on CNU students and what hopes and advice they had for them.

Park Nam-yong, Professor, Dept. of Pre-Veterinary Medicine

My beloved CNU students, raise your spirits as Churchill proclaimed, "Boys, be ambitious!" It is important to have ambition and to have a vision for your future. Aim high in life and try to achieve success as quickly as possible. Prepare yourself for life both at home as well as abroad. One more thing I want to emphasize is, to be brave, and not to be inactive.

Shin Gyeong-gu, Professor, Dept. of English Lang. & Lit.

First of all, let’s drop the attitude about the local university being a poor one. Your life will develop according to the efforts you make yourself. If you don’t overcome this mentality it will be almost impossible to improve your abilities and develop your potential powers. If you conquer this negative attitude and have pride in yourself however troublesome your situation is, then good results will follow. Secondly, I would like to recommend that you have a challenging spirits. Never be content with an easy alternative.? Finally, focus on your objectives and never compromise.

Wee June-bok, Professor, Dept. of Business Administration

As barriers between national boundaries are collapsing and the world is becoming smaller, we face much more fierce competition. Getting a decent job is increasingly more difficult for the students here as well as those at other universities. What I want the students here to do is to develop their abilities to foresee the future. Reading a lot of books is certainly one suggestion towards achieving this goal. Thinking both indidividually and independently or being creative are other ways that help you survive the intense competition.

John D. Murray,?Visiting Professor, Dept. of English Education

At this university, unfortunately, you must compete against others for better grades.? But I would like you to look at things differently and think about your career seriously.? First, compete against yourselves. Second, burn yourself with the desire to master the subject in which you are majoring.? Try to strive throughout your careers to add to your knowledge.?Make full use of leisure time which can be a really good opportunity to improve your abilities.

Chun Sun-ae, Professor, Dept. of Economics

The students here are good-hearted and study hard to get good grades. Although I have spent only a short period of time here, I find some students more involved and more active than last year. What I would like to emphasize is this: “To experience the various opportunities being offered to the students.? It is also important to maintain an open-mind no matter what you do.? We live in the information age and we have access to all different sources of information on the Internet. You should be able to utilize this information according to your personal motives and ambitions.”

Woo Hee-gweon, Professor, Dept. of Chemistry

I think the students at the Chonnam National University are untainted, industrious, and have a strong love for the regional community they live in. What I would like to add to this list of strong points is to have balanced positive thoughts and attitudes.?Don't be content with an easy job, just because it is available. Try to choose a career which you can pursue during your lifetime.?I would like to recommend reading a lot of books and participating in voluntary social services. By doing so, you will be able to expand your knowledge, experience and frame of mind. You are also advised to develop your ability to cultivate your own happiness by resting, traveling and partaking in sports events.
