From The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

* “On earth” is a phrase used for emphasis in questions that begin with words such as how, why, what, or where. It means that a person is very surprised at the thing the person is asking about. “What on earth for?” is often used to suggest that there is no obvious or easy answer to the question being asked.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a post-war romance movie based on the novel with the same name released in 2008. It contains the dark but touching story of people from Guernsey Island under the Nazi occupation during World War II. In 1946, Juliet, a London writer, was sent a letter from Dawsey, a farmer on the island. She came to know about the unique story of a book club on the island and decided to write a story about it in a newspaper. However, the society members refused her proposal due to the painful back story about Elizabeth, one of the society members, who fell in love with a German army surgeon. She had been arrested by the Nazis for helping a starved slave escape, and at the end she was shot in a German concentration camp rescuing a young girl. Juliet got back to London and wrote a book just for the society.

Seo Yun-sang: There are moments when books comfort everyone. Even if our lives are different, books bring us together. In that sense, this movie is cozy and rustling. I like potato peel pie. ★★★★☆

Lee Seung-hyuk: In the dark, each flower bloomed, and I just hoped that their petals would not fall off. It was a melody from a typewriter, not a gunshot that announced the end of the war. ★★★★★

Heo Jeong-hyun: The days when lives withered and the yearning for freedom blossomed. The days when people were hurt by people and were healed by books and people. I can understand those difficult moments in history by watching this movie. ★★★☆☆

Kim Jin-seong: A writer Juilet was impressed with the story about real love in a literary society on an island. Their meeting was fateful as they loved reading books. I felt warm watching this movie as it was heartwarming. I recommend you see it when you want to find peace of mind. I think it is good to see the film to make you feel better. ★★★★☆

Mun Seon-yu: This is the best movie that stimulates my curiosity. The title was unique, so I was interested in it, and after watching the movie, I was amazed by its visual beauty. Reading books is a good experience, but I think watching movies gives me a good visual experience. ★★★★☆
