Chonnam National University (CNU) opened its urban gardens for local residents on March 11. The Institute for Agricultural Practice Education (IAPE) at CNU established a total of 76 urban gardens around the agricultural practice facility on Yongbong campus to offer daily recovery support for residents who are tired of the prolonged COVID-19 situation. Lee Ji-woong, chairman of the IAPE, said, “We hope that residents will find a little slice of happiness in nature through the process of cultivating and harvesting crops here. We will continue to strive to become a national university that coexists with residents.” This year, the center divided the gardens into 56 sections of bare ground and 20 sections of frame, and parceled them out to residents for a two-year period. In addition, the IAPE changed the entire area of the bare ground section to increase equity in securing sunlight for each section. It has been operating its urban gardening education program since March 25, which it plans to run six times a year for farming beginners and the elderly.
