Chonnam National University (CNU) held a metaverse-based matriculation ceremony on March 2. A total of 1,000 people, including around 600 new freshmen, their parents, faculty and staff members, attended the ceremony on a metaverse platform called “CNU Metaversity.” The university has developed the platform independently for the first time in a national university in Korea. Welcoming messages for the class of 2022 were displayed and the names of each freshman were engraved on a large art wall on the metaverse platform. CNU President Jung Sungtaek said, “Whatever you imagine, CNU will generously make your dreams and hopes become a reality. We will support you to be a confident and free person, during his congratulatory speech at the ceremony. The university provided more than 300 fixed channels in the shared virtual space to make new students of each department conveniently join the ceremony. Lee Sae-hee (Freshman, Dept. of Ethics Education) said, “I am happy to become an ethics department student at this university where I wanted to study. I am also delighted to meet professors and seniors in person on campus. It is my first time to take face-to-face classes as a university student, so it is a little hectic. But, I will adapt quickly to the new situation and want to have a good campus life.”
