Chonnam National University (CNU) held a metaverse-based commencement ceremony for 2022 graduates on February 25, and conferred degrees to a total of 4,031 graduates: 3,145 Bachelor’s, 732 Master’s, and 154 Doctoral degrees. The graduates attended the ceremony as avatars on a metaverse platform, CNU Metaversity, which featured four places including the Main Gate, Yongbong Tower and Yongbong Hall, the University Auditorium, and the University Playground. On the online platform, they customized their virtual selves and took part in various activities such as taking photos, finding hidden CNU emblems, making a time capsule, and taking a look around campus. CNU President Jung Sungtaek delivered a message, “Be proud, be open to challenges, cooperate, and love your alma mater,” during his congratulatory speech at the ceremony. Kim Yu-jeong (Graduate, Department of Education) said, “I made a lot of good memories during my years at CNU. Although I am now leaving the university, I am sure I will remember these moments I have had on campus.”
