The number of bicycle users has been increasing recently because it is good for health and the environment. Public bicycle services are also popular among students. Actually, we can see many students who use bicycles on campus. You may have tried your best to ride a two-wheeled bicycle when you were young. There is a campus club that reminds you of your childhood innocence while riding a bicycle. It is “Yellow Bike” at Chonnam National University (CNU).

The goal of Yellow Bike, which was established in 1997, is to love nature, humans and bicycles, and reminisce childhood memories while riding a bike. Therefore, its name was created using 'Yellow', which is a color that innocent children like and is used to paint their goods because it has a good impact on them. The club members gather every Tuesday to decide where to go, and regularly take a bike trip on Saturdays. They usually travel to places around Gwangju such as Hwasun, Damyang and Naju. Sometimes they go on a long-distance bicycle tour by bringing their bikes on express buses. In June, the club went on a long-distance ride along the Yeonggwang Coastal Road.

Before riding bikes, the members set their goals first. While they ride toward their destination, they enjoy a change of scenery and fresh air every moment and reach a new place. This series of processed are the driving force for them to take part in club activities. Also, achieving a sense of accomplishment by reaching the destination with their own power is a great charm that can be felt through joining the club. Yellow Bike President Jung Jae-yeong (Sophomore, School of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering) said, "The attraction of the bicycle is simplicity and freedom. Unlike other sports, cycling is simple because the activity is carried out by pedaling and going forward. It is also the sport that you can enjoy on your own without time and space constraint.” This semester, it plans to have more long-distance rides to increase the sense of accomplishment for club members.

The COVID-19 situation has been making it difficult for groups to work together. However, the Yellow Bike members continue their club activities through following the quarantine rules. In the past, they used to meet and hold regular meetings every week, but now they share opinions using messengers. When participating in a ride, all members wear masks, prepare personal equipment and check their temperature. According to the social distancing rules, the number of people is limited, the club activities are divided into small groups. It is a misfortune that many members are not together, but they are enjoying a variety of activities with the efforts of club executives.

This semester, the club will take part in bicycle competitions and test their efforts. By preparing to go to various locations, it will increase the satisfaction of its members. If you want to feel a sense of accomplishment and freedom through riding a bike, Yellow Bike would be a great choice. Lee Je-won (Sophomore, Dept. of Marine Production Management) invited new members to his club, “I hope many students join our club and take wonderful trips together. They can make precious memories with club members.”
