On February 1, the inauguration ceremony for 21st President of Chonnam National University (CNU), Jung Sungteak, was held online. Due to the Coronavirus, the regular ceremony was replaced by a video of the inaugural greeting, as well as congratulatory messages from all over the country. Both students and locals watched the video on YouTube to express their support, and congratulatory videos were sent by Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-sup, as well as the acting presidents of each of Korea’s national universities and 49 universities abroad. In his inauguration address, President Jung Sungteak said, “In an era of great transformation where infectious diseases and climate change threaten the global ecosystem and world order research, the mission of universities has become more important than ever.” He also vowed to prepare for the next 100 years of CNU through change and convergence, which will be the core values that will take us into the future. He ended his speech by encouraging both students and faculty by saying, “Let us all work hard together for the sake of a proud and free Chonnam National University.”
