I think it is too early to introduce a voluntary military system in Korea right now. Although there have been no major battles between North and South Korea, minor conflicts still occur, and the two countries are not yet totally free from war. Also, the biggest problem we would face when introducing the voluntary system is the sudden loss of military strength, since working in the military would be less preferred. Some might say that developing technologies such as missiles and robotics can prevent military loss. But war is still conducted by humans, and technology alone cannot easily replace military personnel. Due to the unique geopolitical situation of the Korean peninsula, the conscription system should still remain. Only after that situation is relieved can we start discussing moving to a voluntary military system.
