CNU students did a four-day volunteer work in rural communities from May 4 and 7. Divided into nine groups, about 220 students participated in voluntary activities in Damyang, Gangjin and Gwangju. Kim Chang-yeon (Sophomore, Dept. of Environment and Energy Engineering) said, “I wanted to put myself in farmers’ shoes by carrying out voluntary work in a rural village. I knew that it is really tough and difficult for farmers to live their lives everyday in a rural village from an education and a village foreman’s speech during an orientation program, and more activities to enhance solidarity between students and farmers are more needed.” They helped local farmers’ work including carrying fertilizer sacks, making rice seedbeds, and cleaning garlic stems in rural areas of Damyang, Gangjin and Gwangju. They also had opportunities to know the difficulties that farm villages faced. Choi Do-hyeong, president of CNU’s General Student Council that organized this volunteer program, said, “Through volunteering in rural communities, we hope that students learn about our society as its members and feel the difficulties of rural villages directly. Personally, I wish the student volunteers would keep in touch with villagers after the program.”
