Interview with Seo Sin-jeong

Q. What pushed you to start this job?
When I was nineteen years old, I became interested in weaving bamboo all of a sudden. I knew I had a good ability to learn it fast and the skill to improve. By helping my father, I comprehended deeply that I was born to possess this work as a lifelong occupation.

Q. What is the most burdensome part of your job?
As most Korean people think bamboo weaving is a piece of cake, they do not have much of an appreciating attitude toward handiwork that is in reality a time-consuming and strenuous job. I feel very downhearted when I hear people undervaluing my job.

Q. It is important to preserve this bamboo weaving art and bequeath from ancestors to future generations. What do you think about it?
Yes, it is. If no one wants to keep this art, it will fade away from our society. The reason why I think it is crucial is that the bamboo craft represents South Korea to the entire world, exposing its precious history and tells people about Korean traditional wedding culture.

Q. What do you think should Korean people know about bamboo craft?
Korea has a long way to reach a position where everyone will acknowledge the value of handwork like other countries such as Japan, Italy and France. I want them to fathom that bamboo-weaving art is hard-won and a demanding job as it takes both your time, health and you should be very patient. Someone who would like to possess this job as a hobby or a life-long job should have good feelings for the work and have respect for old Korean history.
