The winner of the 10th Hugwang Academic Award is Jung Geun-sik, a professor of the Department of Sociology at Seoul National University. President Jeong Byung-seok said, “Professor Jung Geun-sik is an active scholar who has dedicated himself to social change through constant academic research activities,” in his congratulatory speech at the award ceremony held at Yongji Hall on October 20. During the award acceptance speech, Jung Geun-sik said, "Although relations between North Korea and South Korea are in a difficult situation, we should not neglect efforts to restore the lost trust and to resume communications. Before the 20th anniversary of the June 15 Mutual Declaration between North and South arrives, let us make Korea a new co-operative and peaceful society”. CNU authorities commented that his achievements are closely connected to the life and the spirit of the former President Hugwang Kim Dae-jung who contributed to democracy, human rights and peace in Korea. CNU established the prize to commemorate the achievements of the former President Kim Dae-jung and to continue his spirit for the future.
