On May 18, 2017, Chonnam National University (CNU) held the 37th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement at CNU Yongbong Hall. Around 200 people including CNU President Jeong Byung-seok and National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun  participated in the ceremony and paid their respects to people who devoted themselves to the democracy of Korea. There were a brief report about CNU’s role in the May 18 Democratization Movement and several commemoration speeches. After Jung Lan-hee, vice president of CNU Faculty Council, recited the declaration “To All the Intellectual of the Republic of Korea” written by CNU professors on May 24, 1980 and all participants stood up and sang “Marching for Our Beloved” in unison. CNU President Jeong Byung-seok said, “CNU has a proud history of playing a critical role in defending Korea’s democracy. It has been pride and hope to younger generation of CNU.”
